Learn How To Manage Burnout In Your Business

Apr 17, 2023

If you’re feeling tired and burnout, this post was written specifically for you! Burnout & exhaustion happens to the best of us, glow boss. I don’t want you to feel like you’re alone in these feelings because when you’re a passionate business owner that puts their all into the vision they have for their life, sometimes it can all feel like a heavy weight on your shoulders. That’s why I think it’s crucial that we choose to talk about the difficult side of entrepreneurship just as much as we talk about the successes. Building a business is fun, exciting and challenging, but it’s not always rainbows and butterflies. The reality is that you’re not going to feel inspired all the time and you’re definitely not going to jump out of bed excited about work every day.

We are human and as much as we want to have the highest level of enthusiasm for our business at all times, our bodies and minds don’t function like that. And it’s okay! One of the best quotes I’ve ever been told is, “there’s times when you need to slow down to speed up.” We need a reminder from time to time of the benefits of rest. Rest is crucial to creativity & productivity. It can be difficult to understand that it’s normal to feel fluctuations in your energy when it comes to your business when we are constantly comparing our daily lives to other biz owners on social media. That’s why it’s so important to keep in mind that the internet gives a very narrow view of people’s journeys.

I want to be transparent in sharing with you that, lately, I have NOT been in it to win it. My energy has been lacking and my body hasn’t been feeling great. If you know what I’m talking about, you know this kind of phase can feel hard. Energy is one of the biggest assets we have in our business because this is the driving force behind what we accomplish. But feeling out of sorts for a period of time doesn’t mean that you're not cut out for entrepreneurship. It doesn’t mean that you should give up, it just means you need to give yourself grace.

For years, in the beginning stages of my business, I had such a different level of energy. I would wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning like a crazy person because I was just so excited to get to do what I loved. Now that I’m a mom and my schedule and priorities have shifted, so has my energy. I find myself waking up at 7am instead of 3am and you better believe that I have to drag myself out of bed occasionally. As my business has grown, I’ve delegated a lot of the work I used to do as a one woman show, which has changed what my workload looks like altogether. These changes in our lives will come with differing levels of energy, but there’s ways to manage it to still see growth!  Here are my suggestions for managing your energy in a way that is most conducive to your business growth:

Focus on Revenue-Generating Activities

Throughout various stages of life, you’ll experience these shifts and fluctuations in energy, which is completely normal! What I have found is that you need to find a way to balance these fluctuations to know when rest is necessary and when you just need to push through and get done what needs to get done. What’s helpful in finding this balance is understanding what activities and tasks are the most beneficial and impactful in moving the needle forward in your business. If you find yourself doing things that aren’t giving you the return on investment of energy, such as making a bunch of content just for the sake of making content and noticing it’s not giving you an increase in revenue or conversions, then it’s time to re-evaluate if you’re putting your energy to use in the most efficient and effective ways possible. This is when it's beneficial to focus on understanding which types of content and tasks are revenue generating in your business and delegate the majority of your energy into those specific areas.

Go Deep Instead of Wide

I’m a multi-passionate person at heart. Which means that there's been times when I’ve allowed myself to get squirrel syndrome and change direction of my focus to other areas in the beauty industry that were not directly correlated to spray tanning. The problem with this is that I had so many offers available, it got to be overwhelming and confusing for me, which means it was most definitely confusing for my audience. It wasn’t until one of my mentors advised me to go deep instead of wide, that I finally realized the power of hyper focusing and niching into one specific area of business. This is when I decided to cut out a bunch of different course offerings from my business and only focus on the Beginner’s, Master’s and a few other spray tanning specific courses. When I dove deep into this area and focused my energy there, my business started to explode. By doing this, I was putting out messages that were very clear about who I was and what problems I could solve for my audience. Not only that, but growth happens where you focus the majority of your energy. My advice is to get super clear on what’s actually generating money in your business and put the your attention and effort into growing that.

Whether you’re in a space where you’re feeling excited and thriving in your business or you’re on the other end of the spectrum of feeling exhausted and burnt out, just know that certain phases come and go. Feeling burnt out doesn't mean you’re a failure or that you should throw in the towel and give up. What matters is how you persevere and grow through these times. Being an entrepreneur is a marathon, not a sprint. What’s going to make the most impact in driving the vision you have for your life is how you show up in the long term. Your biggest asset will be your commitment to yourself and your growth as a business owner by continuing to show up no matter how much failure you’ve felt and no matter how hard it feels some days to keep going. Learning how to manage your energy and find what you need during the times when your energy isn’t at its peak is going to help you in staying consistent for the long haul.
