Recently, our very own Spray Tan Class Founder and Beauty Biz Babe, Kelly Callaghan did an interview with Canvas Rebel giving a little more insight into what her story has looked like over the last few years while building her business. Kelly first starts out with the journey she went on that launched her into starting her own mobile spray tanning business and how that transformed into the 6 figure business it is today. We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Callaghan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kelly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

I started my business in 2014 with zero experience, zero mentors, zero entrepreneurial knowledge. What I did have were faith and the internet.

Through many struggles and many wins, I have been able to grow my business from $0 to over a half-million-dollar business. Now, I teach others how to do the same.

I’ve witnessed many successes and many people who have given up. One of the biggest things I’ve noticed between those who are successful and those who are not is the type of mindset they embody. The students I work with who become successful are the ones who have the “whatever it takes” attitude. They have a belief that, no matter what, they CAN do it. They are resourceful. They figure it out. They take initiative and dedicate themselves to continuous growth. They understand that they don’t understand everything and will ask for guidance when they need it.

Success happens to those who go for it. You need to have grit, determination, and the willingness to never give up NO MATTER how hard it gets. Success happens to those who keep going – even when it gets tough.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that, can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

I’m Kelly Ann Callaghan, founder of Spray Tan Class.

I didn’t always have a half-a-million-dollar beauty business. A few years ago, I was sitting in my cubicle at my corporate sales job bawling my eyes out.

I was gutted.

I had the money, the great job, the so-called success…but deep down, I was the UNHAPPIEST I had ever been in my entire life.

“Why should I have to sacrifice my happiness for money?” I thought to myself.

So, I quit my job and searched for my happiness, on nearly every continent around the world. But – after 18 months of living the nomadic dream, I found myself DIRT BROKE with only $2k left to my name.

Right then I had to make a choice. Be happy and stay broke, or get a real job and be miserable. Neither one of those sounded like a good idea.

I wanted to have both.

I wanted the money AND the happiness. I didn’t want to choose one for the other. So, I decided I was going to have to start my own business so I could be in control of my finances and my happiness.

Now, I get to help women all around the world do the same through my online spray tan training courses at, live events, and product line, X-Tan Sunless.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

One of the best things about starting a spray tanning business is that there is little capital needed. I had invested $2,000 of my own money into the business and was able to make that back within a month of taking my first paying client.

Since I started 8 years ago, I have never taken out a loan. I have always created money, saved, and reinvested it back into my business.

When people sign up for one of our courses and are hesitant to spend $2,000 on starting a business I have to question how serious they are as business owners. The mobile spray tanning industry has one of the lowest start-up costs of any business I know and each tan is profitable enough to be able to make that back in a short amount of time.

It’s the perfect example of “what do you have to lose?”

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

My company, Spray Tan Class, started taking off when I started my YouTube channel. I was one of the first people in the sunless industry to start a personal brand so I think that is what attracted people initially. My brand and personality was something that other people starting out could connect with.

Since then, I’ve grown my community on multiple platforms and have been extremely consistent with producing content and assisting others in their own growth.
