What is PH?
Mirriam Webster defines it as:
“a measure of acidity and alkalinity of a solution that is a number on a scale on which a value of 7 represents neutrality and lower numbers indicate increasing acidity and higher numbers increasing alkalinity…”

What does that have to do with spray tanning?
Well the skin has a natural ph of 4.5-5.5 which makes it acidic. The natural acidity of the skin creates an oily film on the outermost layer to help prevent the growth of bacteria and to keep it slightly moisturized. If you were to apply something to the skin that has more of an alkaline ph, then the skin would lose some of that oil (a.k.a the acid mantle) and lose that protection. In this day an age, so obsessed with the newest creams and lotions that will make wrinkles appear smoother and aging skin tighter, we aren’t even thinking about what the ph levels are. Regardless of whether or not they do as advertised, some have that higher number which means the skin is more dry than it should be.
Won’t barrier cream help?
Yes and no. Barrier cream is used to create a literal barrier between the skin and the spray tan so the DHA doesn’t fully bond in those areas. Applying it to the areas that you don’t want tan is perfect because for example who wants bronzed palms? Every other part of the body though, you want the bond to happen with no interference.* That is one of the reasons we want the clients to show up with absolutely no products on the skin.
But why PH spray?
With the PH balancing spray it will help the outer layer of skin by bringing down the levels enough to where the acid mantle will return evenly & the porosity of the skin will even out as well. Since it is a spray, it will only lightly coat the skin, so it won’t prevent the solution from attaching to the skin. Even, naturally moisturized skin will help the tan last longer and go on more even.
Should I sell it as an upgrade?
That is completely up to you and what you feel is right for your business. At Slay Beauty Bar we offer it in the price of all of our spray tans because it helps set us apart from others and some of our clients do see a difference in longevity.
Try it out and see if you feel like it adds to what you have to offer. Some technicians use it and some don’t so please don’t feel pressured to add this to your spray routine if it doesn’t work for you.
