My name is Brittany Campbell and I am the owner of Sunshine Artistry in Fayetteville, NC. I offer spray tanning, makeup artistry, and hair styling. My beauty business journey officially began in February of 2015 when I bought my very first spray tan machine. However, let me just rewind a bit:
Myself, like most, have had trouble figuring out “what I wanted to be when I grow up”. When I graduated high school, I went to makeup artistry school where I learned everything from bridal beauty, fashion beauty, special effects, and spray tanning. However, after my schooling was over I still did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went to college and received an undergraduate in marketing and an MBA, and worked in the corporate world for 5 years doing makeup and hair styling on the side. After several years I realized corporate America was not for me and I bought my very first spray tanning machine. Fast forward 6 months and I began renting my studio and went full time with my business.
Once opening my business my life changed. My husband and I were accustomed to both having two steady incomes. But once I was no longer at my marketing job we had to make cut backs – we no longer was able to live leisurely as we had been living. It was difficult at the beginning – going from two incomes to one which made for some fights and tears. However, I knew all of it was well worth it. I even got a part time job to make sure I could help out a bit where I could. I worked as hard as I could to fight my way into developing a business that would eventually bring in a worthy income. I think this fear motivated me, every time my husband and I would sit down and look at finances and contemplate if owning a business was going to work out, I worked harder. I was determined to never work for anyone ever again and that motivation has lead to where I am today.
Over the course of the last two years, I have developed a steady clientele and doubled my business from the first year and continue to grow. There have been hiccups along the way but with the right customer service and friendly environment (even when things went wrong), much of my clientele has been word of mouth. From numerous marketing classes and personal understanding, I knew how important it is for each and every client to have a positive experience. If a problem arises with a client post tan or makeup/hair application I make it a mission to fix any issue that arises.
I love the work I do. One of my favorite parts of being in the beauty industry is meeting new people every day and taking already beautiful people and helping them feel more confident about themselves. Receiving texts messages, reviews, and emails stating they never felt better and loved working with me is exactly why I do what I do. Even when bad days arise and I want to give up because I feel overworked and underpaid I know I am right where I belong after reading these types of messages.
Two years later I am in the same small studio space that I began in but much of the looks have changed. In business school, I was taught how important it is to continue to invest in your business, especially for the first 3 years, and that is what I have done! I am on my third spray tan machine (everyone a step up from the last), better extraction systems, make up upgrades, retail, and continuing my education-always. My future goals include a storefront, employees, and potentially a second location.
I know I am just in the beginning stages of my business and I am beyond excited to see the growth that is in store for Sunshine Artistry. Beauty Business Babes Group have helped me tremendously – it has been a source of knowledge, comfort, and confidence. Being a business owner is a difficult task and not everyone is cut out for it. I am thankful for fellow Beauty Babes for the inspiration to go on and do great things.
