As a little girl, I always knew that I wanted to be ‘special’.
I remember telling my Mom once, “why watch people on T.V. when you can be on T.V.?”.
Growing up, I had this dream to be a famous actress- the ones you see in the movies with beautiful locks of hair and a perfectly white smile. I wanted to be something more than just average. Even at a young age I couldn’t comprehend why my parents worked so much or why we never achieved a sense of wholeness as a family. The truth is my parents didn’t have the time or energy to create a solid relationship building household. My mom woke up at 4 A.M. every morning and we would be back at home with her at 7 P.M. The only time we saw our father was if we stayed up past 9P.M. as he worked early in the morning, throughout day and most evenings.
I never want to work myself into the ground so much that I neglect the bonding time my family and I need in order to establish healthy, strong relationships. I want to LOVEwhat I do. I want to have the freedom to choose when I can see my children and spouse. I want to be able to create my own life the way I see fit.
I understand that entrepreneurship is not for everyone and it’s most definitely not all rainbows and unicorns. The amount of time that I spend on my business today requires me sacrificing right now for a better future. Trust me when I say that I live and breathe my business… right now. My boyfriend wonders why I am constantly on my phone, computer or staring off into space. It’s not that I am trying to be rude but I don’t think many people understand that obsession you have once you are immersed in doing something you’ve always dreamed of. I cannot stress it enough: I LOVE WHAT I DO which brings me to the next reason I started my mobile spray tanning business.
I want to have purpose in my life and love what I do.
Having been in sales for 10+ years gave me thick skin, great experience working with people, a great understanding of sales and marketing and financial security. The one thing it did not give me was happiness. Consistently, month after month, I was at the top of my ranking at the companies I’ve worked for. These companies are at a national level and were cut throat in the process of who made it on and just as cut throat when it came to who was being thrown off. The whole concept of employees being easily replaceable never sat well with me. As a company, I believe that you are only as strong as your weakest link. You need to do WHATEVER you can to help your people do better day in and day out. Granted, not everyone is going to be a good fit and that is okay but I do feel as though the corporate world was too political and not the environment I saw myself thriving in.
My motivation for starting my business was to create honest, solid relationships with whoever it was I was working with. Whether you are a client of mine, an affiliate, a mentor, a prospective student- I want to help you in whatever way I can. I am able to do that with my business now. I now work with clients and vendors all over the U.S. and in Canada to help them achieve their goals and to assist wherever I can. The relationships I have made over the past 2 years weren’t forced, they weren’t intimidating, they weren’t mundane; they were real, true relationships that happened naturally. Of course, not every person I encountered was a perfect fit for what I needed at that time and vice versa but I can tell you that the people I do work with on a daily basis make me so incredibly happy. Conversing with my student’s and other people in the industry inspires me, motivates me and is a constant reminder that I am on the perfect path in my journey.
Lastly and probably the most important reason I started Positively Tan was to help people and to genuinely be happy. When I started, I was in it to help women feel beautiful about themselves. I wanted to have fun conversations, see the look on their faces after they got their spray tan, make their day just a little better. Honestly, who would have thought such a simple thing could bring so much delight?! I am not kidding when I say that I became great friends with a handful of my client’s and have had so many great conversations and laughs throughout my journey as a spray tanning artist. I work day in and day out and am the happiest I have ever been- EVER and I am so incredibly grateful for that.
I don’t know where you are in life, where you have been or where you are going but I can tell you that it is possible to find true happiness in everyday life. Yes, there are struggles here and there but I have way too many things to be grateful about these days. I am so proud to have been able to make the leap into entrepreneurship and I hope that any of you who are teetering on the idea take advantage of doing it now because the longer you wait, the less likely you’ll be to follow your dreams.
You can never fail if you’re trying.
