During a call with one of my students, I was asked what I thought led me to my success as an entrepreneur. I was somewhat caught off-guard since none of my students have really asked me that before. Most questions were related to technique, marketing, or sales. Although this question threw me for a loop, I decided it was important to pay it forward, so I’m answering this question publicly. I want business owners in the industry to take away from my journey and hopefully, they too can use these techniques and strategies to grow and build success. I hope this article speaks to you and I would love to hear all of your successes, struggles, strategies and goals.
“As one we can do a lot but together we can do much more.”
Before I begin, allow me to say that talking about finances can be a little uncomfortable for me but to be helpful, it’s imperative for me to be transparent so that I can (hopefully) inspire and help others. There are also a lot of sacrifices, hardships and major mental roadblocks I had to endure and overcome throughout my entrepreneurial journey. Many emphasize their “highlights” and not enough about their struggles; that’s a topic for another blog. Right now, I want to share with you 5 powerful ways I built my 6-figure beauty business within the span of two years.
Consistency. I always show up for my clients, whether it’s by email, Facebook, by phone and by doing follow ups. I’m consistent with prospects and clients who are already working with me. It’s important they know I am here to help you when you need me. I want my clients to feel good about their decision to work with me because I, as well, feel good to know they are happy because my duty has been fulfilled. One testimonial mentioned I always answered in a timely manner, even while I was on a plane to Hawaii. It’s more than just being accessible, it’s really about being present. Being actively involved makes a tremendous difference for your client’s overall experience. I love what I do and I genuinely care about my clients so I try to take care of them as best as I can. When you love what you do, “work” doesn’t really seem like work.
Attitude. I expect the ebbs and flows of the business to happen. I don’t dwell during the rough patches; instead, I use that time to work on projects I can’t do when I am busy. I have faith in the universe and its ability to provide exactly what I need when I need it (i.e.: breaks when I am stressed out). I try my best to eliminate negative self-talk, I understand that I will make mistakes and correct them to the best of my ability. I meditate frequently and set realistic goals that make me feel good and excited to accomplish. I only offer products, services, and programs I truly believe in and feel good about offering to my clients. One key ingredient is confidence in your abilities and in your business; to be able to meet (or exceed) your client’s expectation.
ALWAYS under promise and over deliver, never the other way around.
Innovation + Marketing. I take inventory of what I am doing, constantly! How can I improve? How can I be the “best at my craft”? How can I get recognized (hint: marketing) in the most professional way possible and serve my clients as such? Do I feel good about the services, products, and packages I am offering? Through the process of owning a business, I have learned that by telling your story, relating to people and really knowing your craft in whatever field you are in are all important aspects when it comes to creating relationships with your clients. Your clients want to know they are working with a legitimate business owner who stays on top of their game and gives them exactly what they say they are going to — trust is everything!
Investing. I’m not afraid to invest in my business – Never! I know that continued education is going to be crucial to my success. I have invested in multiple pieces of equipment to see what works best, continued education (master certifications, esthetics school, business training), business coaching, virtual assistants, re-branding, marketing assistance, opening up a location, a car for my business and the list could go on and on. I know that investments will pay off in the long run. I have faith and I feel good when it comes to putting money back into my business. I am not afraid to let money “flow” because I know I will get that back and more when everything is all said and done.
Vision. Anyone that knows me knows I am laser-focused when it comes to my business. I know exactly the amount of money I want to make each month and I have absolute trust I will reach my financial goals. I write down my financial goal for the month on a dry-erase calendar and I look at it at least once a day. At the end of every day, I write down what I made that day; then, I add the days up as the week goes by. By the end of the week, I write exactly what I earned that week in a column on the side of my calendar. When the month ends, I add all of the weeks up and I usually (about 90% of the time) hit close or near my goal. I feel empowered when I know my exactly what I’m working towards, it helps me stay motivated through the month to see the numbers grow!
My pricing, websites, marketing and follow-through are ALL a reflection of me and how I run my business. I show up for my clients with what I say and with what I do 100% of the time; and if I for one second believe, I can’t deliver, I let them know. I won’t work with someone if I feel they’re not a good fit. I’m in it to create win-win situations for both of us. As you’ve probably noticed throughout this article, ‘feeling good’ about you, what you’re doing and where you’re headed is one of the most important characteristics to have. You must feel good about your programs, pricing, vision etc. in order to provide the best experience for yourself and others. Confidence in doing your absolute best will really show through to your clients and they will not only be happy while working with you but they’ll send referrals and more importantly, come to do business with you again.
Have fun, be honest, be ethical and genuinely love helping your clients get exactly what they want. Give it your all and see how easily you will attract the perfect clients for you!
